After two walk-offs yesterday, Kentucky this afternoon made it three-straight as it picked up its first walk-off win of the season. It was a clean, back-and-forth affair that saw the Wildcats leading 3-1 heading into the seventh inning after Nolan McCarthy hit a missile out to left field for a two-run home run.
The event’s official name was changed to “Men’s College World Series” no later than 2008. The most recent hosting agreement between the NCAA and the city of Omaha and related entities, signed in that year, states, “The official name of the shall be the NCAA Men’s College World Series”. However, as of October 2021, the CWS logo still appeared on the NCAA’s official D-I baseball tournament bracket, and on the front page of the NCAA’s official CWS website, without the word “Men’s”. The NCAA has since added “Men’s” to the event’s logo, and both the NCAA and College World Series of Omaha, Inc. (CWS Omaha), the nonprofit group that organizes the event, now consistently use the phrase “Men’s College World Series” to describe it.
Florida State took care of business today against Virginia to keep its season alive. After four thrilling games to open up the CWS, this was the lone result that was never really in doubt. Virginia’s Jay Woolfolk and FSU’s Carson Dorsey traded scoreless frames through the first two innings, but in the bottom of the third the ‘Noles got on the board thanks to a bases-loaded walk to James Tibbs III.
With its backs against the wall, Tennessee responded with a hard-fought 4-1 win to force a decisive National Championship game tomorrow night. Texas A&M again struck first, though, as in the bottom of the first inning Jace LaViolette hit a mammoth solo home run to give the Aggies an early lead. Thanks to excellent pitching on both sides, the score remained 1-0 Texas A&M into the seventh inning. But with two outs and a runner on first, Dylan Dreiling turned around a left-on-left fastball and deposited a go-ahead, two-run home run over the bullpen in right field.
The first edition of the College World Series was held in 1947 at Hyames Field in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The tournament was held there again in 1948, but was moved to Lawrence Stadium in Wichita, Kansas for the 1949 tournament. Since 1950, the College World Series (CWS) has been held in Omaha, Nebraska. It was held at Rosenblatt Stadium from 1950 through 2010; starting in 2011, it has been held at Charles Schwab Field Omaha (formerly TD Ameritrade Park Omaha). The name “College World Series” is derived from that of the Major League Baseball World Series championship; it is currently an MLB trademark licensed to the NCAA.

Giancarlo Stanton flew out to right before Anthony Rizzo struck out swinging to end the inning. That’s a double whammy for New York, which not only didn’t score but will need the bottom of the order to get the rally started next inning.

Before the AL and NL were split into divisions in 1969, the team with the best regular-season win–loss record in each league won its pennant and advanced to the World Series, barring a tie necessitating a pennant playoff. Since then each league has conducted a League Championship Series (ALCS and NLCS) preceding the World Series to determine which teams will advance, while those series have been preceded in turn by Division Series (ALDS and NLDS) since 1995, and Wild Card games or series in each league since 2012. Until 2002, home-field advantage in the World Series alternated from year to year between the AL and NL. From 2003 to 2016, home-field advantage was given to the league that won that year’s All-Star Game. Starting in 2017, home-field advantage was awarded to the league champion team with the better regular-season win–loss record, regardless of that team’s seeding in earlier playoff rounds (i.e. a Wild Card team in one league will have home-field advantage over a division winner in the other league if it had a better record or wins the tie-breaking procedure).
Major League Baseball’s first World Series game occurred on Oct. 1, 1903 when the Boston Pilgrims defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 in Boston, Mass. The game occured ten months after pro football’s “World Series.”

The Pirates won their third straight pennant in 1903 thanks to a powerful lineup that included legendary shortstop Honus Wagner, who hit .355 and drove in 101 runs, player-manager Fred Clarke, who hit .351, and Ginger Beaumont, who hit .341 and led the league in hits and runs. The final game of this inaugural World Series started out as an intense pitcher’s duel, scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Hobe Ferris hit a two-run single. Phillippe started his fifth and final game of the series and Dinneen his fourth. As he did in Game 2, Dinneen threw a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and leading his Americans to victory, while Phillippe pitched respectably but could not match Dinneen because his arm had been worn out with five starts in the eight games, giving up three runs to give the first 20th-century World Championship to the Boston Americans, Honus Wagner striking out to end the Series.
