It was reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s stunning homer that lifted Los Angeles over the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series at Dodger Stadium — one of the most famous swings in baseball lore.
The 1904 Series, if it had been held, would have been between the AL’s Boston Americans (Boston Red Sox) and the NL’s New York Giants (now the San Francisco Giants). At that point there was no governing body for the World Series nor any requirement that a Series be played. Thus the Giants’ owner John T. Brush refused to allow his team to participate in such an event, citing the “inferiority” of the upstart American League. John McGraw, the Giants’ manager, even went so far as to say that his Giants were already “world champions” since they were the champions of the “only real major league”.
The game saw the Pirates come away with a 4-3 win over the Orioles and even their series at two games apiece. The first ball pitched in the first World Series baseball game played at night – a strike from lefty Luke Walker to Paul Blair – was donated to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Dodgers did it for Vin Scully and Fernando Valenzuela. But most of all, they did it for the city of Los Angeles and the faithful fans who couldn’t witness the team’s 2020 World Series run in person.

11:40 p.m. — PITCHING CHANGE. With Weaver out of steam, Boone brings on Leiter Jr. for the final two outs. He faces off against Edman to start, who strikes out swinging to put the second out on the board.
Arguably the most talented player in the history of baseball now has the one big thing that was missing on his résumé, and all it took was joining a Dodgers team that needed him. His 2024 season will be legendary in Japan.
It was a rough start for the Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty, who was more than solid in Game 1 but exited after 1 1/3 innings Wednesday with four earned runs to his name. A Giancarlo Stanton homer off Ryan Brasier then made it a five-run lead in the third inning.
Game little league world series
The state champions (as well as the Northern California, Southern California, Texas East, Texas West, and District of Columbia teams) compete in one of ten different regional tournaments (increasing from 8 in 2022). Each regional tournament winner then advances to the Little League World Series. A comprehensive breakdown of current and historical US regional tournament locations, participants and results is available online. Since the geographical boundaries of the District of Columbia are exactly the same as the capital city of Washington, this District is usually identified specifically as “Washington, DC.”
The application for umpires to request assignment at the 2025 Little League® International Tournament is officially open through the Umpire Registry, giving Little League umpires the opportunity to volunteer on
In 2011, pools were eliminated, with the eight U.S. teams continuing to compete in one bracket and the eight international teams in another bracket. The tournament is double-elimination until the U.S. championship and international championship games, which remain single-elimination, with those winners advancing to the World Championship game. Each team in the tournament still played a minimum of three games, via consolation games as noted above.

Old world game
This is also where Old World’s final new resource comes in: training. This is generated by military buildings and leaders, and is used both to train and rank up military units. Since unit promotions can use training in place of experience, you can choose to have a smaller, more elite army instead of a larger one. Training can also be spent on a turn-by-turn basis to get extra orders or force march a unit beyond their normal range, so I rarely ran out of ways to use it to squeeze out a bit of an extra advantage in combat if I had any to spare.
Includes 6 items: Old World, Old World – Heroes of the Aegean, Old World – The Sacred and The Profane, Old World – Pharaohs of the Nile, Old World – Wonders and Dynasties, Old World – Behind the Throne
Includes 13 items: Manor Lords, Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, Norland, Breachway, Xenonauts 2, Against the Storm, Cataclismo, Clanfolk, Terra Invicta, Old World, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command, Sons of Valhalla, Empires of the Undergrowth
I was less thrilled by the consequences for failing to balance these internal concerns, though. The one time I did annoy one of my noble families enough to cause a revolt, they simply spawned a few units of rebels without much fanfare and I was able to put them down quite easily without much lasting harm. Some of that was luck – my best army was close to home rather than away on campaign. But it still felt a bit anticlimactic. It’s more interesting thinking about how to prevent a revolt than it is to actually put one down. Since every city you found must be awarded to one of the four noble families, you have to think about whether you want to keep their power bases spread out and balkanized, or clustered so they’re easier to pin down.
Old World is like a post-graduate program for players who already have a bachelor’s degree in Sid Meier’s Civilization. Despite covering a much smaller slice of history, it takes the Civ template as a starting point and layers a lot of new mechanics on top of it. And for the most part, they’re pretty interesting twists. But they’re often presented in ways that aren’t immediately elegant or approachable. The most prominent of these is a system of named characters and aristocratic families which adds a sort of “Crusader Kings Lite” dynamic to your internal and international politics.
